Fiber Laser Cutting Parameter Calculator

Our online calculator is designed to support operators and CNC programmers in quickly and accurately identifying the optimal settings for laser cutting systems. By selecting the basic variables of your process, you will immediately obtain the reference values needed to configure your machine safely and maximize production efficiency.

How the Calculation System Works

To get the results, simply set three fundamental parameters:

  • The laser source power (supports ranges from 1500W up to 60000W)
  • The type of material to be cut
  • The sheet metal thickness in millimeters

Once the data is entered, the system processes the information and returns the possible configurations, specifying for each option the required assist gas (such as oxygen, nitrogen, or air), the ideal operating pressure, the effective power to be delivered, the nozzle specifications, the cutting height, and the correct focus position. Naturally, these parameters also depend on the specific characteristics of the material, the surface, the cutting head used, and many other factors. These figures are for guidance only, and their use is entirely at the operator’s discretion and responsibility.

If a specific thickness and material can be cut with different gases, the tool will display all available alternatives, allowing you to choose the one best suited to your finishing or speed requirements.

Continuous Production vs. Occasional Cutting

To ensure maximum reliability and source longevity, the calculator automatically distinguishes parameters intended for continuous production from absolute limit parameters. If the entered data requires an effort that pushes the equipment to its maximum capabilities, the system will highlight the results with a specific warning. These extreme configurations are strongly recommended only for occasional cutting and not for intensive production cycles.

Selection Criteria for Duty Cycle (PWM) and Frequency

In fiber laser cutting, duty cycle and frequency are modulated primarily to control the heat input, preventing the continuous wave (CW at 100%) from uncontrollably melting the material.

Duty cycle (PWM): Controls the percentage of time the laser is on. It is lowered to reduce the average temperature (while maintaining high peak penetration power) when cutting sharp corners, small details, or during piercing to prevent craters.

Frequency (Hz): Defines the number of pulses per second. Low frequencies (e.g., 10-200 Hz) are used to safely pierce thick materials, giving the gas time to blow away the molten metal. High frequencies (e.g., 1000-5000+ Hz) are used on thin materials to achieve a smooth edge similar to continuous cutting, but with less overall heat.
